Here’s a few practical tips, things you can do at any time, even now, to start feeling better about yourself and you will.
• Do something meaningful for somebody else, no matter how small. Carry some shopping for someone, help an elderly person across the street or give someone an unexpected gift – a flower will do. Pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for having done something useful or helpful for somebody. Praise yourself because the reality is that very few people will do what you have just done.
• There are things that you do do well, no matter how mundane. You can tie your shoelaces I presume, or get dressed on your own. Think of a time when have succeeded at something in your life, anything will do, now matter how small. Think of something that you once couldn’t do and now you can do. Think back and remember how you felt when you achieved it. It felt good. Feel the good again now, the satisfaction. Live with that feeling for a few moments and then pat yourself on the back and praise yourself.
• Find something small to do that is outside your normal comfort zone and just do it. Size does not matter. It does not have to be a big thing. No matter how tiny it is important to move just that little bit outside your comfort zone. You have to do it. As soon as you have done it bask in the glory, your glory, you did it. Nobody else but you did it. Well done. Shower some more praise on yourself.
•Remember or think of someone who is worse off than you. They are there, believe me. The mere fact that you are reading this tells me that. You are after all, a good deal better off than street children anywhere in the world. If you would prefer to, then think of an animal suffering. I want you to feel compassion for them. That is not the same as feeling sorry for them. Let’s take dictionary definitions. 1. A deep awareness of and sympathy for another’s suffering. 2.The humane quality of understanding the suffering of others and wanting to do something about it. Now feel compassion for them. How does it feel, where do you feel it? Can you turn up the volume, make it more intense? Next imagine you are looking at a movie of yourself re-enacting one of the lowest moments in your life. Now feel the same sort of compassion for the person in the movie of you. Remember how it feels. Come out of the movie. Start to think about you and your life in the real world with the same compassion. Stop beating yourself up. You are awesome.
Any of the above techniques will work. If you apply them you will better your Self Esteem. And praise yourself every time you achieve even the smallest of objectives. In the words of the commercial – ‘Because You are Worth It!’
Promo Time – but only because I honestly believe it is the fastest route possible to overcoming Low Self Esteem.
